Afghan Security Transition: the Last Mile? The Afghan Defence Minister Gen. Bismillah Mohammadi announced on 14 June that the fifth and last phase of security transition from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) will take place within three days. Mohammadi was speaking at a graduation ceremony of the Afghan Army soldiers in Kabul. It is apparent that there is likely to be a six month overlap period that may ensure that there is oversight over operations by the Afghans thereby adding a factor of insurance to provide a degree of confidence of the indigenous forces.
