Afghan Security Capacity Building Trends July 2018

NATO Heads of State and Government summit in Brussels on 11 and 12 July underlined continued support to Afghanistan in its quest for peace......... NATO has agreed to extend the financial assistance to Afghan forces for another period of four years after 2020 that is up to 2024. “As the Afghan government continues to work towards peace and reconciliation, we will continue our assistance by extending our financial sustainment of the Afghan forces through 2024 and by pledging to fill staffing shortfalls, especially in priority areas,” the declaration said.............Afghan Air Force (AAF) capacity building is on stream with receipt of more Black Hawk multi-role helicopters, ability to use laser-guided bombs to prevent the civilian casualties during the airstrikes and training in maintenance of the growing fleet of aircraft and helicopters. There have also been accusations over civilian casualties in Kunduz. The United States has deployed the Security Force Assistance Brigades (SFABs) specialised Army units whose core mission is to conduct training, advising, assisting, enabling partner forces. The Afghan Territorial Army concept is taking root with first batch receiving training and the plan for Special Forces expansion from a division-sized to corps is in progress........................
