Afghan Presidential Elections – Voting Pattern Could Benefit Ashraf Ghani

Given that of the 2.6 million voters a majority were in the urban areas and the lower percentage from the North, incumbent President Ashraf Ghani may have the lead in the Presidential election held on 28 September.

With both candidates who are supposedly in the lead from the perception point of view – Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah claiming victory Afghanistan could be headed for another contentious verdict as in 2014 when the American Secretary of State John Kerry had to adjudicate between the two leading candidates ironically the same pair that is in the lead in 2019.

While Dr Abdullah Abdullah has claimed that his team has won the polls based on feedback from the ground, Ghani is quietly confident. “My team and I are strictly abiding by the rules and will wait up to the moment the election committee announces the results. Anything before that are predictions and claims that are not helpful,” 

He is also not willing for a scenario that would replicate 2014 and says, “We do not have time for a months-long power struggle this time.”  .....................
