Afghan Parliamentary Elections: People Win, Amidst Process Flaws Security Gaps

Strong voter turnout despite Taliban threats, bomb and mortar attacks in various parts of the country and glitches in the polling process denoted a win for the people of Afghanistan in the third parliamentary elections of the country held in 32 of the 34 Provinces on 20 October. Polling in southern Kandahar and Ghazni provinces will be held later during the month due to security reasons. 70,000 troops were deployed for the polls in three tiers around the polling booths to ward of Taliban attacks with boycott call given by the rebels. Minister of Interior Wais Barmak told TOLOnews on 20 October evening that 192 security incidents had been reported countrywide. Pajhwok Afghan News (PAN) quoting reports from the ground indicated that 44 people were killed and 238 others wounded in violent incidents but these casualties have not been confirmed...........
