Afghan Cease Fire: An Idea Whose Time Has Come?

On 7 June, a week before the Eid ul Fitr, President Ashraf Ghani offered announced a ceasefire with the Taliban. “The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan announces a ceasefire from the 27th of Ramadan until the fifth day of Eid-ul-Fitr following the historic ruling (Fatwa) of the Afghan Ulema,"  Ghani said in a video message on the Presidential Palace’s Facebook page. “This ceasefire is an opportunity for the Taliban to realise that their violent campaign is not winning the hearts and minds but further alienating the Afghan people from their cause," Ghani said. “With the ceasefire announcement, we epitomise the strength of the Afghan government and the will of the people for a peaceful resolution to the Afghan conflict,” he added. On 9 June the Taliban accepted a cease-fire for the first three days of Eid but restricted to the Afghan security forces and excluded the foreign troops. The Taliban also announced the release of prisoners who will not be a threat to the group while making arrangements for the other incarcerated to be visited by their families during Eid...........................
