A Divided Kabul Gives an Upper Hand to Taliban

Multiple fault lines have emerged in the top leadership in Kabul to include presidential polls, administrative authority of the NUG and intra Afghan talks which portends continued instability handing over advantage to the Taliban.

Results of the Presidential elections in Afghanistan have been delayed despite four months of holding of polls. Independent Elections Commission (IEC) and Independent Elections Complaints Commission (IECC) commissioners appear to be divided on political lines.

Meanwhile President Mr Ashraf Ghani is issuing instructions impacting policy such as reforms of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs without consultation of the Chief Executive Officer, Dr Abdullah Abdullah co-leader in the National Unity Government (NUG) of Afghanistan. 

The top leadership is also divided over negotiations with the Taliban. ....................
