2019 - Another politically turbulent Year for South Asia

South Asia (including Myanmar) – has the unique distinction of all states  being functional democracies. This exceptional factor has the potential for political instability in short term as was witnessed in 2018 in Sri Lanka but is inured from catastrophic disruptions that could come about in other forms of government. While militaries in South Asia have a strong influence in at least two states – Pakistan and Myanmar the political governments continue to be elected by the people at large thus reflecting to an extent will of the masses. Yet various factors such as parliamentary majority – ironically a thin one (in Pakistan) as well as an overwhelming one (in Bangladesh), constitutional infirmities, dissonance amongst parties and leaders and an attempt at political  churning are some of the factors that portend an year of flux ahead for the region........................
