Maldives – Attempts at Institutional Stability

Maldives has gone through a period of major political instability since February 2012 when the government of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) led by President Mohamed Nasheed was dislodged under controversial circumstances,  followed by the election of the former President Abdullah Yameen in 2014 and his five year tenure in which all opposition leaders including Nasheed and Yameen’s elder brother another former President Gayoom Mamoun were jailed on specious charges.The role of the judiciary had come up for heavy criticism for having favoured Yameen.Now the new government led by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the parliament in which Mohamed Nasheed is the speaker is attempting to make the judiciary accountability by bringing judges of the Supreme Court accused of corruption to book.Maldives Parliament unanimously voted to back a corruption probe by the Judicial Service Commission, despite apparent efforts by the Supreme Court to hamper the process for allegations against Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Didi, who stands accused of taking a million dollar bribe to send former president and parliamentary Speaker Mohamed Nasheed to jail in 2015....................
