The country’s geographic positioning includes the leverage over the most strategic trading choke point, Strait of Hormuz, from which about 20% of world’s petroleum passes through and hence one of the most strategic locations for international trade. Given this, the naval force of the Islamic Republic of Iran plays a very significant role in its Defence Strategies. The United States Office of Naval Intelligence published a report, “Iranian Naval Forces: A Tale of Two Navies”, with an aim to attain a better understanding of the Iran’s Defence Strategies and its intentions for reorganisation and clearer insight into how its navies are progressing during this time of transition.
