Taliban Mentor Loses Senate Elections in Pakistan
Maulana Samiul Haq, a mentor to a number of Taliban leaders, fell short in the Senate Elections in Pakistan.
Samiul Haq is seen as an influential leader in the tribal areas which are federally administered in Pakistan but reportedly has not been able to muster enough support to pass through the somewhat complex voting system for Senate Elections in the country.
Geo TV recently reported that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is planning to release additional funds of Rs277 million for its ally Maulana Sami-ul Haq’s seminary, Darul Uloom Haqqania.
The aid to the seminary will increase from Rs300 million to Rs577 million.PTI claims that the seminary is being mainstreamed. The defeat fo Sami ul Haq in the Senate elections which follow a complex voting process indicates that he lacked support of a number of members of the provincial assembly and thus could not muster the required numbers.
Senate of Pakistan gives equal representation to all federating units which is in line with the constitutional role attributed to the Upper House i.e. promotion of national cohesion and harmony.
Each of the four provincial assemblies elect twenty three members from their respective provinces whereas four members are elected by the National Assembly from the Federal Capital and eight Members are elected from the Federal Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) in such manner as the president may by order prescribe.
Senate is a permanent House which symbolizes a process of continuity in the national affairs. The term of its member is six years, however, one half of its members retire after every three years.
