Over 250 Pakistani soldiers continue to be trapped by the militants in Southern Waziristan and Mohmand. These include at least seven officers. It is now clear that the troops were trapped while travelling in a convoy lightly armed and were surprised by a small body of 25 to 30 militants.
Ninety percent of the current US assistance of $2 billion a year to Pakistan goes to the military as per a report titled "˜ Pakistan: a perilous course"™, unveiled at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). The $1.8 billion bounty that is being provided to the Pakistan army is no doubt a significant accretion to its defence budget which amounts to almost one third of its total. This is a significant gain and is no doubt the key cause of fuelling the arms race in the Sub Continent.
