Israel Aerospace Industries in discussions with Sri Lanka to upgrade and return to service its Kfir fighter aircraft.
January 2006 Sri Lanka continued to be on the brink of return to civil war after many years of fractious peace. There were a number of attacks on the security forces allegedly by the LTTE, though the LTTE claimed that these were by vigilant groups raised by the government itself, a specious argument. However there was some mature statesmanship on the part of the newly elected President Rajpaksa who though stated to be a hard boiled Sinhala nationalist categorically ruled out a return to war in the near future. This paid rich dividends as the Norwegian intermediary Eric Solheim succeeded in arriving at an agreement between the recalcitrant LTTE and the Sri Lankan government to continue talks at Geneva by end February
