Balancing Saudi Arabia and Iran

Pakistan President Mr Asif Zardari attempted to play a very difficult balancing act, juggling between two regional rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia. Thus he visited both the countries, in fact Iran twice during the month and then also made a trip to Saudi Arabia to meet the top leadership there.

Violence during the month continued with a suicide attack in Bannu on 12 January killing 18 civilians, in Kohat a time bomb in a bus killed 17. Punjab also saw a suicide bomb attack on 25 January with 13 Civilians killed. On 31 January, six people including four police officers were killed and 14 wounded in two bomb blasts in Peshawar, capital of Khyber Pakhtoonwa. One of the attacker was a teenage suicide bomber.

The differences between the MQM and the ANP supporters have come to a head with election to fill the seat of the MQM legislative member Raza Haider, who was shot dead by gunmen in August. Mohajir Quami Movement won the bloody by-election in a contest between the Mohajirs (migrants from India) and the Pasthuns led by the Awami National Party.
