India: the Villain?

Over the past few weeks there is a perception being built in Nepal polity that non formation of the government is a function of Indian interference. The visit of Mr Shyam Saran who was nominated as the PM"s envoy to solve the political deadlock is being seen in Nepal as an attempt to ensure that unity being built by the Maoists does not last long. This was thus very poorly received. In related developments, Media bodies in Nepal expressed serious concern over statement of Indian embassy on 27 August in which it accused Nepali media of negative publicity against Indian Joint Ventures (JVs). Indian Embassy had said some media outlets were publishing false reports on quality of products manufactured by Indian JVs based in Nepal. "The Indian JVs make a substantial contribution to the Nepalese economy, employment, revenue to the government and exports from Nepal," the embassy statement had said. Thus the role of India seems to be under fire in many ways. India has a long road ahead to make up for this anti India sentiment in the country.
