Myanmar Election Commission (EC) has promulgated some rules for elections with parties requiring seven days permission vide ‘EC Directive No.2/2010 dated 21 June, 2010′ and required to provide the specific place, date, starting and finishing time, and the name and address of speakers before holding meetings. The speakers are not allowed chanting slogans in procession or giving talks and distributing publications tarnishing the image of the ruling junta.
Many are thus seeing the polls to be held in

during the next few months as a sham election wherein the military is likely to install favourites of its own such as the current Prime Minister and his coterie in power while generals Than Shwe and Maung ye will continue to control the reins. This supposition may not be far off the mark, for even after elections, there would be 25percent representatives in uniform in the parliament and these will be supplemented by many as Mr Thein who will be in civil clothes but owing their allegiance to the army being former military officers. There is however hope in the long term that a cycle of elections would lead to greater electoral democracy in the country. As for now the government wants to satisfy the international audience to some extent by these elections.
