Afghan Army And Police Build Up
Claims and counter claims are being made by the Afghan security forces chiefs and NATO trainers that the Afghan Army and Police build up is not likely to be completed by 2013 or 2014 or so. This process no doubt will have many ups and downs, while Afghan security chiefs have indicated that there are no foreign forces in the provinces of Panjsher, Dai Kundi, Bamyan and Nimroz, some of these have traditionally very low presence of the Taliban and some as Nimroz are very sparsely populated thereby not requiring a major counter guerrilla presence. Despite the ongoing operations it would be reasonable to estimate that the Afghan forces will have to operate in the Southern and the Eastern provinces led by the ISAF for some years to come.
The Afghan National Army is now said to be 144,000 strong. The progress of building numbers in the Afghan National Army is a good measure of success being achieved by NATO/ISAF trainers as well as their Afghan counter parts in producing trained men and women in large numbers in quick time. The quality of these would however remain an issue and while many claims are being made it would be necessary to judge their efficacy based on the performance on the ground rather than figures given out in press conference.
