‘Tarkash’ Stealth Frigate Launched

The second of the three follow on Talwar class stealth frigates being built by Yantar Shipyard, Kaliningrad, Russia was ceremoniously launched on 23 Jun 10. The frigate, christened ‘Tarkash’ during the ceremony, belongs to the elite Talwar Class of ships, three of which namely Talwar, Trishul and Tabar are already in service with the Indian Navy. The first follow on ship, christened ‘Teg’ was launched on 27 Nov 09. Their mission in Navy spans the entire spectrum of Naval warfare, viz Air, Surface and Sub-surface. The ships are capable of operating in Blue waters, and are at the forefront of the Indian Navy task forces.
IAF Will Field 242 Sukhoi 30 MKI

The Cabinet Committee on Security cleared one of the biggest defence orders of recent times as per the Times of India valued at almost Rs 15,000 Crore for an additional 42 Sukhoi-30 MKI fighters. This will take the Sukhoi fleet of the Indian Air Force to 272 when all the aircraft are delivered by around 2018. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will begin manufacture of the 42 aircraft sometime in 2014, each costing in the range of Rs 350 Crore. The Su 30 order book started with 50 fighters, followed by licensed production of 140, to which another 40 were added. The present order for 42 fighters is up scaled from 40, with two more added to make up for the two crashed fighters.
Exercise ‘GARUDA’ – A New Step in Indo French Air Force Cooperation

The Indo-French Air Exercise Ex Garuda at Istres Air Base in Southern France concluded on 25 of June 2010. During the Ex Garuda, the Indian Air Force and French Air Force were engaged in various missions ranging from close combat engagement of large forces, slow mover protection, and protecting and engaging High Value Aerial Assets. “The focus of the Air Exercise is learning from each other’s best practices. DRDO to Carry out BMD Test in August

The DRDO plans to carry out endothermic test for the BMD system in August 2010. Phase-I of the two-tier BMD system, designed to track and destroy hostile missiles both inside (endo) and outside (exo) the earth's atmosphere is expected to be deployed by 2012 as per a report in the Times of India.

Police capacity building has been the foremost challenge for Mr P Chidambaram as the country's Home Minister, while he has developed the capacity of core forces which can tackle terrorism in urban areas as the NSG and also first responder forces with each state government there is no progress so far in developing substantial capacity of central police forces and also there are major gaps in numbers of state police.

So far as Manipur is concerned, Naga groups imposed a blockade on NH-39 with effect from April 24, 2010 protesting the holding of elections to the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Manipur. Defence Indigenisation with Limited FDI: A Paradox

The Department of Industrial Promotion and Policy, under the Ministry of Commerce in a discussion paper proposed to raise FDI in defence production to 74% with the aim of ensuring technology transfer and replacing imports worth some $8 billion. Defence production at present has a 26% FDI cap.
DRDO Relations with the Services

The Debate on relationship between DRDO and Services was thrown open by remarks of the DRDO chief Dr VK Saraswat when he said that self-reliance in critical defence technologies cannot be achieved by the premier defence R&D organization alone. Ex Yodha Shakti and Azm Nau III

An Indigenous LCH in the Sky

The maiden flight of the indigenously manufactured Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) manufactured by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited took to the skies during the month. Chief Test pilot Unni Pillai and Hari Nair put up a spectacular flying display of the LCH on its maiden flight.
