Regional Centre of Counter-Terrorism
Prime Minister Sheikh Haseena has been a strong proponent of greater regional cooperation to counter terrorism. Thus a regional Counter-Terrorism Centre is benign set up in Dhaka with financial and technological assistance from European Union to train people across South Asia. Investigators, police and intelligence personnel will be trained in fighting terrorism at the Centre to be funded by the European Union. “We have chosen Bangladesh to host the regional centre considering its strong commitment to eliminate all sorts of terrorism, as well as its support to EU causes in the international fora, including the UN,” said Stefan Frowein from the EU. India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Myanmar and some other countries will be able to avail of these facilities.
Bangladesh has been keen on regional approach to counter terrorism in South Asia which given transnational nature of the terrorist spread has validity. For this it is also the best suited given inherent differences between India and Pakistan, it is only countries as Bangladesh or Nepal where the SAARC secretariat is located which can locate such cooperative mechanisms. However functioning of these will always remain a concern given that the entire security debate in South Asia in many ways is held hostage to the Indo Pakistan dyad.
