Leh Floods – Meeting the Deluge

A massive cloud burst occurred in Leh after torrential rains lashed Leh and its surrounding areas at about 0100-0200 hrs on the intervening night of 5-6 August, 2010. This triggered flash floods in Leh Town and surrounding areas of Choglumsar, Pathar Sahib, Phyang, Hanoyogma and Nimu. Since the tragedy occurred during the night there was substantial loss of precious human lives. Damage to property and disruption of communication and services were also widely reported.

This also benefited the country financially. The European Commission confirmed a Climate Change Trust Fund of 6.5 million Euros to the Government of Maldives for mitigation and adaptation projects and technical support on climate change.
Bhutan: Blasts and Earthquake Vulnerabilities

Two Royal Bhutan Army (RBA) soldiers were injured in an improvised explosive device strike in Gaden village, Umling, Sarpang early morning on 12 October. The bunker on the border was a border observation post manned during day. The attackers took away two weapons of the soldiers. “The attack is suspected to be carried out by Maoist militants from the camps in Nepal,” said the RBA spokesperson.
BANGLADESH : CYCLONE SIDR

Cyclone Sidr at 240 kmph intensity causes extensive losses to 16 southern districts in the country. Human losses are estimated to touch an overwhelming 10,000 or so, 26 lakh being worst affected while extensive loss in crops may lead to food insecurity. Global support to Dacca to restore order post Sidr sees large inflow of aid and assistance to the tune of $ 600 million. India provides aid worth $ 1 million and lifts ban on export of rice to Bangladesh.

Attendance at the venues was satisfactory and television ratings were low, but not unexpectedly so. Live Earth had the potential to serve an important role in the re-emergence of grassroots concern in the United States with climate change, but it appears to have failed in that task. That project remains undone, and those fighting for the passage of significant climate change legislation in the United States in 2007 are beginning to face the consequences of waning public interest in the climate issue. They are also facing the lack of a coherent grassroots movement in support of action on climate change.

Health Hazards Due to Bad Environment Management Dengue General Dengue (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) has struck the national capital with approximately 70 cases reported during the month. This is likely to increase due to lack of adequate precautions to prevent its spread. Persons living in a dengue-endemic area can have more than one dengue infection during their lifetime. Dengue infection can cause viral fever as well as fatality due to hemorrhage.

A report in SciDev.Net indicated that scientists in Nepal’s Institute of Engineering's Centre for Disaster Studies have developed a cheap and easy technique to protect houses from earthquakes. The technique includes use of stone and unfired bricks as material for house making in Nepal which is fortified by mud and bamboo easily available locally along with gabion wire.
